Self-Improvement and Reinvention with Rebecca Fishman

There’s the promise of new beginnings, opportunities, adventures. For most, this also brings about a closer look at the hero or heroine of the story and we set about planning a Madonna-esque reinvention (sans the cone bra!) From improved posture or fitness to new behaviours, better habits or a brighter outlook on life, we aim to achieve ‘a new me .’

As human beings, we’re uniquely capable of imagining a different self and uniquely capable of realizing that vision. But not all of our self-improvement designs easily come to fruition. Failed attempts at change are often blamed on lack of willpower. But though determination is important, it’s not the only factor necessary to bringing about change. So what else can contribute to you realizing your vision of a new you this year?

Consider this: if you were renovating your home, a lot of thought would go into it. You’d be specific about what you wanted to achieve. You’d reflect on what’s possible and realistic considering the available resources. You’d create a detailed action plan. You’d manage the progress of your project and modify your plans accordingly. You’d expect some setbacks and figure out how to deal with them.

What you wouldn’t do is envisage ripping down your bungalow and building something like the Taj Mahal, on a budget of £29.99, using a blueprint drawn-up by your five year old and completing all works within two weeks! That would be setting yourself up for failure.

It’s the same with self-design. Just deciding you want to be super organized this year isn’t going to be enough. So here’s how to set yourself up for success in your endeavour to become a new and improved you:

  • Get specific. Create a clear picture of how you want to be different. If you wanted to make your home more comfortable, that could mean any number of things: adding an en suite; refurbishing your kitchen. So if you want to ‘be more assertive’  what does that really mean?Being more vocal? Learning to say no? Upholding what you want as important?

  • Create realistic, time-specific goals. Becoming an Olympic sprinter within three months won’t be achievable, but improving your 10k running time by two minutes might be. When you are looking for change in a more subjective area, consider how you can set specific goals. If working on your confidence, perhaps set the objective ‘to deliver a ten minute talk at the March meeting.'  

  • Create an action-plan. What needs to happen at each step? What resources will you need? What obstacles might there be?

  • Evaluate progress. What data could you look for to confirm you’re on track?

  • Celebrate successes! If you’re not progressing as planned, re-evaluate your goal, your plan, the resources needed.

Finally, wanting to create positive change is great, but come to it from a place of self-love, not self-deprecation. Start your journey by saying ‘I am good enough’.
